Magazine of the year?
“German culture magazine 032c, for the way it continues to follow its own direction in terms of content and design yet is gradually spreading its reach and success. 032c is a magazine of surprises, it maintains its own agenda rather than following the normal PR-driven agends of the mainstream. You never know quite what you’ll find in the issue, which makes it difficult to describe/sell/pigeonhole.”

Best cover?
“The recent combined covers of boardsports magazine Huck and movie magazine Little White Lies. Published by the same company, each magazine featured different content realted to the new Spike Jonze movie Where the Wild Things Are. The two covers link together a single illustartion by Geoff McFetridge. A really clever piece of design that encourages the reader of one magazine to buy the other.”

Best newcomer?
“Not a lot to choose from this year! But I’ll go for Manzine, a small UK independent man’s magazine with a fanzine look that successfully challenges the tired world of the men’s market.”

Biggest improvement?
“The UK edition fo Wired launched in early Spring and was a disappointing shadow of the fabulously creative US edition of the magazine. By the end of the year the UK edition had improved massively, still not meeting the standards of the US magazine but certainly achieving its own identity and becoming a must-read.”

Biggest disappointment?
“The closure of all UK branches of Borders bookshops. These stores were a vital source of distribution for magazines of all types but particularly smaller independent titles.”

Which celebrity sums up the magazine year 2009 best?
“Michael Jackson of course!”
